Ganta Igarashi

Ganta, born with the sole purpose of being used in his mother’s human research, was shielded from this fate as she developed maternal instincts and found a substitute test subject, Shiro. Despite the experiment-induced torment Shiro endured, the two formed a strong friendship at the research facility where they lived together.

However, this bond becomes tainted when Ganta witnesses a horrific scene of Shiro’s subjection to cruel experiments. He forgot about their shared past upon being sent away to live with his father. Ganta grows into an ordinary schoolboy but carries within him innate resilience and vengeance.

His character takes continuous evolution throughout his prison tenure as he oscillates between fear, confusion, anger and depression yet always retaining an unwavering concern for his friends.

Shiro

Shiro is a young albino girl with snow-white hair, red eyes, and pale skin. She was adopted as a child as an experiment subject, leading to physical deterioration and the creation of a separate personality known as the Wretched Egg to cope with the pain. A simultaneously adorable yet tormented creature, Shiro is extremely fond of sweets and possesses a childlike outlook on life.

Despite these cheerful attributes, her deepest desire is Ganta Igarashi’s happiness even if it requires drastic actions from her part. Her goal is his approval without which she is easily hurt. Along the series, she matures into her true self, a merge of Shiro and Wretched Egg characteristics.

Azuma Genkaku

Genkaku was raised in a Buddhist temple. He is a young man with long red hair who wears monkish attire and prayer beads adorned with a skull. Beneath his insouciant exterior lies a sadistic and unstable personality. He enjoys rock music, smokes and sees life as pure suffering.

This sinister worldview developed from traumatic childhood experiences which almost broke him until the Great Tokyo Earthquake led to an epiphany that ‘salvation’ could be found in death. He is an Undertaker at Deadman Wonderland, where he seeks to convert others to his cause through brutal violence, even delighting in their demise.

Minatsuki Takami

Minatsuki is a seventeen-year-old girl, with a duality in her nature that reflects on her appearance. Initially sporting braided ponytails, and then switching to a small braid after a penalty game at Deadman Wonderland. She often dresses in light hues reflecting an innocent demeanor.

This innocent façade covers her sadistic nature which enjoys the suffering of others. The trauma of being abandoned by her mother during an earthquake and later enduring abuse from her father contributed to this twisted side of her personality.

Despite the horrific experiences that led to Minatsuki’s hardened exterior, there are moments where glimpses into her genuine emotions are seen. In particular, around her brother Yo who genuinely cares for her well-being, prompting emotional growth and lessened hostility over time.

Yo Takami

Yō is a slim, blond-haired young man with piercing light blue eyes who carries himself in an affable manner. Though outwardly polite, he’s crafty and unrelenting due to his role as a spy. He has a knack for larceny and is knowledgeable about machinery and the layout of Deadman Wonderland.

He is driven by his profound love for his sister Minatsuki whom he believes innocent of their father’s murder. Yō has willingly taken upon himself imprisonment to secure her freedom. Despite discovering her deceptions and true nature, Yō remains devoted to Minatsuki and gradually forms a sincere friendship with fellow inmate Ganta.
