The anime Elfen Lied is about a race of superhumans with horns called Diclonii. They are hated and feared by humans, and are kept in a facility called the Diclonius Research Institute. The protagonist, Lucy, is a Diclonius who breaks out of the Institute and goes on a rampage.

However, she is stopped by a man named Kouta, who takes her in and cares for her. Over time, Lucy begins to develop feelings for Kouta, and starts to question her desire to kill humans.

Lucy / Nyu

Kurama

Kurama is an intelligent and level-headed individual. He is also kind and caring, always looking out for the well-being of Nana. Kurama’s wealth of knowledge in many different fields makes him an invaluable asset to the team.

His calm demeanor and ability to think clearly in difficult situations is a great asset in any situation. Kurama is truly a kind and caring person, always looking out for the well-being of others.

Bando

He’s unapologetically sadistic and aggressive, but also has a softer side that he shows on occasion. He clearly longs for a good fight, and is driven by a desire for vengeance after his humiliating defeat at the hands of Lucy.

Despite his rough exterior, Bando does have a caring side. He takes care of Mayu and Nana, and even saves Mayu from being killed by Lucy. His dream of having children of his own is dashed when he discovers he’s infected with the Diclonius Virus, but he still forms a sort of paternal relationship with Mayu.

Mayu

Mayu’s backstory is both tragic and inspiring. She was abused by her step-father before running away from home. She found being homeless a big challenge.

But instead of succumbing to despair, she persevered and found the will to live through her friendship with a puppy she named Wanta. She is also a naturally cheerful person, despite her difficult circumstances.

Mayu is first seen in the anime when she bumps into Kouta, Yuka, and Nyu. When Kouta and Yuka offer to take Mayu in and become her guardians, her whole world changes. She suddenly has a warm and loving home, and two people who care for her deeply.

Mayu blossoms under their care, and she soon begins attending a nearby school. She quickly comes to view Kouta and Yuka as her parents and Nyu as a sister.

Later, Mayu meets up with Nana, and the two become friends. Nana tells Mayu the true story of the Diclonius, Lucy/Nyu, and her vectors. Mayu does everything she can to convince Nana that Nyu is not dangerous, still refusing to believe that Nyu and Lucy could possibly do harm to humans.

Kouta

Kouta is the kind of guy who always puts others first. He’s a student at Kamakura University and lives with his cousin Yuka, but even though he has his own things to worry about, he’s always ready and willing to help out anyone who needs it. That’s just the kind of person he is.

But because he’s so good-natured, Kouta can often be taken advantage of. He’s a bit of a pushover, and people can easily manipulate him. But even though he might get taken advantage of sometimes, Kouta always tries to see the best in people.

He’s been through a lot in his life, losing his father and sister to Lucy’s murderous rampage. Despite all of this, he’s still able to be a kind and caring person, always looking out for those around him.

He first meets Lucy when he’s just a child, and despite her cold-blooded nature, he forms a bond with her. He even lies to her about his cousin’s gender so she won’t get jealous. When she eventually learns the truth, she goes on a rampage and kills his family.

Kouta is able to forgive her, though, and even professes his love for her. In the end, Kouta is one of the only people who truly understands Lucy and her pain. He’s able to see past her actions and see the person she really is.

Mariko

Mariko is a typical Diclonius, a species that is despised by humans. She is sadistic and enjoys killing anyone who comes near her. However, underneath her vicious exterior is a little girl who just wants to be with her family again.

Mariko is incredibly precocious and is able to trick people into giving her what she wants. For example, she was able to get the cell phone code from Isobe in order to postpone the detonation of her bombs.

She is also envious of those who have what she does not. For example, she is jealous of Nana for having friends and for being Kurama’s daughter.
