Fuu

Fuu is a young woman with brown hair tied into a ponytail and eye-catching pink nails that match her floral kimono. She carries a kaiken draped with netsuke, each significant to her past and beliefs. Despite presenting as worldly and experienced to impress her bodyguards, Mugen and Jin, Fuu’s bright personality often leads to mishaps and adventures.

She is the daughter of Seizo Kasumi, a leader in the Shimabara Rebellion who fled to protect his family. Her father’s departure imprinted the image of him as “The Sunflower Samurai”, filling Fuu with longing for his return. After losing her mother as well, Fuu found solace working in a tea shop under an elderly couple.

Sara

Sara is a blind, traditional Japanese woman with brunette hair. She embraces her martial arts discipline and is rarely seen without her Shamisen and disguised Yari staff. She is skilled in music and impresses with her performances. Sara carries herself with a stoicism that borders on arrogance due to her struggle with the loss of her out-of-wedlock child due to her blindness.

She traverses life barefoot and protects herself fiercely, not allowing her disability to render her helpless. She reluctantly joins forces with Mugen, Jin, and Fuu as they travel in the same direction. Alongside them, she learns about camaraderie while also boldly facing enemies using her remarkable fighting skills.

Seizo Kasumi

Seizo Kasumi is a samurai adorned in a purple-black kimono with his hair in a ponytail. He exhibits a profound sense of honor and compassion. He was forced into hiding due to his involvement in the Shimabara Rebellion and abandoning his beloved family. This act instills an indelible memory within his daughter, Fuu, of him fleeing through a field of sunflowers.

Reunited years later amidst turmoil and imminent death, he seeks Fuu’s forgiveness. He is motivated by his love for family and commitment to just causes despite past failures. Seizo leaves behind a legacy filled with courage and admirable intentions. His guilt-ridden farewell brings closure to the father-daughter relationship marked by absence and resentment.

Mugen

Mugen is a volatile and rebellious antihero. He stands out with his unique style and baggy clothes reminiscent of modern hip-hop culture. Boasting messy black hair, a faint beard, and distinctive blue-ringed tattoos on his wrists and ankles, Mugen is undeniably striking.

He is a competitive fighter and womanizer who abhors authority due to his rough upbringing as a pirate in the Ryukyu Islands’ penal colony. He picks fights for sheer petty reasons but holds a respect for skilled opponents. Despite initially clashing with fellow warrior Jin in their consistent rivalry, over time Mugen begrudgingly acknowledges him as a respected adversary and friend.

Jin

Jin is a bespectacled, long-haired young man deemed attractive by women. Even amid dire circumstances, he is collected and discerning, often irritating companions with his stoic reactions but equally winning their trust. His solitary journey in mastering martial arts has limited friendships in his life, making him value the comradeship of Fuu and Mugen immensely.

He detests the oppression inflicted upon people using martial arts skills. He was trained under sensei Enshiro Mariya in a dojo before mistakenly killing him after a contentious decision about its future direction. Jin’s fugitive status attracts attention from ronin and samurai seeking vengeance. His rarely-seen smile hides a lifetime of personal loss and societal rejection.
