Kaworu Nagisa

Kaworu is the 17th Angel and Fifth Child. He inhabits a human body much like Rei Ayanami but considers himself non-human. He emanates warmth and emotional openness, albeit with a detached outlook toward human customs. His music of choice, the fourth movement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, defines his character and symbolizes unity under God.

He bears the title of ‘Angel of free will’, with intentions separate from SEELE’s commands. His pale-skinned and light-grey-haired human form disguises his immense power derived from Adam’s salvaged soul.

Shinji Ikari

Shinji inherited his sensei’s traits of being laid-back and passive. He opts to pilot Unit-01 driven by a deep yearning for his father’s approval and love. He is an introvert haunted by fears of abandonment and emotional pain. Moreover, he often experiences discomfort in social situations.

His apprehension about being forsaken again impels him towards self-sacrifice. He usually resorts to music as an escape mechanism from the world. Shinji’s emotional fragility is balanced by his keen awareness of his flaws and an inherent gentleness.

Asuka Shikinami Langley

Asuka is a proud and strong-willed Eva pilot. She carries herself with a high sense of self. She despises being undermined and desires adult acknowledgment of her skills. Unlike her other incarnation, Asuka Langley Sohryu, she joined the European Air Force instead of graduating from University at 14 and holds no fear of dolls.

She’s more sociable too. She shows attraction towards Shinji and confides in Misato. Post-Near Third Impact, Asuka’s hair is shorter, and she has an eye patch over an Angel-Sealing Hex Pillar scar. Constant struggles have made her colder and more aggressive, but she retains deep concern for Shinji.

Rei Ayanami

Rei starts as a seemingly emotionless and socially withdrawn character. She was fiercely loyal yet distant to Gendo, her sole interaction. She coexists with her solitude in a sparsely decorated apartment in Tokyo-3, which resembles her birthplace. Her interests in psychology and genetics suggest an enigmatic depth beneath her impassive exterior.

Her journey throughout the series navigates through newfound relationships and sporadic displays of emotion. Rei’s sense of self-worth is marred by an acute consciousness of being expendable. But therein lies the intrigue. That small, yet resilient spark of humanity struggling to shine through the bleakness.
